I’ve always seen myself as a perfectionnist and not in a good way. In fact, this caracter has been crippling me out my whole life and to this day, I am learning to let go of it. This week, Mr perfection struck again, so I decided to write a blog to remind myself why I should let go of perfection when doing something. I found 3 important reasons for that.
1- Perfection stops you from beginning a project
This is also known as procrastination. Perfection doesn’t allow you to begin a new project because of the high expection you have of your work. ‘No, I am not good enough’, ‘No, this is too hard’, ‘No, this is too much’. We have an ideal in our head and a clear vision of what we need to do in order to achieve our goal. But we are too overwhelmed by all the tasks we should do. The advice, I give you is to take the stairs one by one.
2- Perfection stops you from ending a project
Beginning a work is already good but sometimes, we cannot stop. We need to re-write a paragraph, add more shadows to a drawing, research more a subject. This is the problem I got this week. I’ve been spending too much time on a report that I should have handed back 2 weeks before, just because I wanted it to be ‘perfect’. Upon finishing, I had new subjects to write about. This is when I realized that during those 2 weeks, I could have been working on another subject. Instead, I was polishing what I already knew. So, guys, have a deadline for everything you do.
3- Perfection stops you from appreciating your work
When the time to finish your work comes, you might feel like it’s not good enough. Yes, you have worked hard but it wasn’t nowhere as good as your expectation. People around you might tell you that you did a great work, but you won’t believe them. Sometimes, perfection helps us to be our better selves but more often than not, it prevents us to appreciate ourselves and our work. And god knows that we should be the first to do so.
So, next time you are afraid to begin a project, don’t scare yourself with your expectations. Instead, take one step after another. Surely, you will see the end of the tunnel. On the other end, if you see that you cannot finish a project, ask yourself if this really matters and whether you should focus your energy on something else, something new that you will bring you more skills and knowledge. And finally, appreciate yourself. You might not be perfect, but it’s a work on doing.
